Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Sounds like a good idea to me...

Because it's unnatural

is it any more unnatural than selectively breeding animals or plants over generations? or grafting one plant on to another one?

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Natural selection take place over generations such that people eating something like beef from a domestic cow have had time to adapt to the enhanced food source. GM is tweaking food so quickly nobody knows what the long term effect will be. For all we know, a side effect will be for all our foreskins to drop off naturally and that will leave a huge number of people without a way to prove how better than the rest of us they are.

When you say plants, are you referring to Cannabis?

If you look at the ingredients in a type of food and don't recognise what half of them are, or even pronounce some of them, it's probably not very good for you.

Because it contains bad AIDS.

There is also the Question of Nutrition and whether GM foods remain as healthy as its natural version.

The real problem with GM is not the product itself but the fact that the seed is then copyrighted, becomes intellectual property and owned by a corporation and is licensed for sale by that Corporation.

So you have Dave who is a traditional farmer with Non GMO seeds which he buys from the wholesaler .and it is susceptible to the environs and disease implications of growing that crop.

You have Steve who buys his seed from the same wholesaler but pays for the GMO seeds which part of that sale goes to the company that CREATED the seed. The Seed is more resilient and hardy and more likely to survive the weather and pests.

Dave's crop will yield less and cost more to produce and then sell on. If Dave wants to compete with Steve he has to turn to GMO crops and line the pockets of the company that created it.

Eventually the GMO seeds become cheaper and the older natural seed is phased out entirely. so eventually GMO will be the only option for all farmers.

Secondly, Traditionally Dave could harvest his seeds from his own plants and re use them, saving himself money. Because GMO seeds are licensed intellectual property, Dave does not have the legal right to re use seed and they should be disposed of as chaff.

Thirdly, if Dave hasn't paid for the rights to use the licensed seed he will be in breach of copyrighted laws. This means that if a handful of GMO seeds are blown from one field to another and you can not prove that they weren't deliberately planet you will fall foul to copyright infringement.

Some farmers who buy the rights to seed one year and dont the next, may have crop from seeds that were dormant from the previous year and they too will be culpable, FORCING Farmers to continue to buy the seed.

This is already happened with Monsanto's Roundup Ready Seeds.

So in summary the reasons to be against GMO are :

1. No one knows the potential health costs.

2. Consumer has no choice in the food they consume. Farmers have no choice as to the products they sell. Farmers end up working for Monsanto and the likes and all the while the Monsanto Brand gets richer an richer off of forcing people to use and eat their product.

If for no other reason we should all be against GMO just for Number 2.

It isn't bad and you won't find any 'peer reviewed' paper, that says it is.
Every single thing that we farm and eat, is gene modified. From wheat to beef, chicken to radishes and apples to lamb.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
The food industry is evil. If they are for it then that is good enough reason to be against it.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Monk. WTF do you eat? Name a single farmed produce that isn't gene modified. Just one will do.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
It's a question of scale and degree though isn't it. What might have been modified over time by breeding against what has been devised in a laboratory with little known about long term affects.

Monsanto are famous for insisting that Agent Orange was harmless. They simply do not know or care about the outcome other than their own profits.

HairySpotter 4:17 Tue Jan 20
Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
because its genetically modified

At the moment we do not know in 30 years time things will be more evident.

Monk. When did anyone eat agent orange? When was it ever sold as a food?
Give me a single example, of a gene modified farm produce, that has been shown to be dangerous. Just one will do.

Simply insist that you & your kids ONLY eat genetically modified (as opposed to genetically evolved) food from now on, then come back in 50 years and let us know how it went. If none of your saucepans have grown an extra head, I might reconsider.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Hairy. We've been eating gene modified produce, for 10,000 years. Let's take an example.
Plant A produces large fruits, but they get eaten by insects.
Plant B produces small fruits, that don't get eaten by insects.
A horticulturist cross breeds 5,000 examples and checks them all, over several years. He finds one that produces large fruit and doesn't get eaten.
A geneticist, puts the 'anti insect' gene, into the large fruit and does it in 3 months.
Both have done the same thing and produced the same plant. There is no bloody difference, except time and money.

Norway

See Joke Whole

Whatever the purpose of AO it was claimed by Monsanto to be safe for use. It reflects the level of knowledge these people have about the long term effects of what they are doing.

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
Norway. Would you consider force-feeding your friends & family food today that was radioactive? To take medicines, potions and tonics of a similar nature?

These were all actively promoted and sold to the general public well into the 1930s until somebody realised that it wasn't a good idea in the longer term. But it took TIME to work out the problem.

You rarely see clocks & watches with luminous dials for similar reasons and there's a plot of land in Wales officially listed as a radiation hazard simply due to the fact that on it is a warehouse that was once used to store old telephones.

Shortest "Time to market" and fuck what happens in 30 years seems to be the only driver pushing GM

Re: Can someone explain why genetically modified food is supposed to be bad?
A basic understanding of biology would tell you that engineering seed crops etc... will reduce biodiversity, and less diversity would make crops less able to deal with diseases, plagues etc... It's a fact. Whether you think it impacts enough for you to care or not is another thing altogether

But I think most of the arguments over how bad they might be for you to consume are largely based on the fact that we don't know. Unless someone wants to correct me.
